Recently a non-profit organization, the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, held a press conference urging women to eat more seafood. They were enthusiastically encouraging pregnant women to eat at least 12 ounces of seafood per week. They were confident in their recommendation despite the fact that it was in direct opposition to the National Academy of Sciences, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration. The coalition made no mention of the risks of mercury in large fish. Days later, many of the members of the coalition distanced themselves from the recommendations. It turns out that their coalition received a $60,000.00 grant from the National Fisheries Institute.
In response to the coalition’s statement, the March of Dimes put out a statement urging pregnant women to not exceed 12 ounces of seafood per week. So before you up your intake of seafood, consider the standing recommendations of the FDA on fish consumption during pregnancy:
1.) Don’t eat shark, swordfish, mackerel or tilefish
2.) Eat no more than 3 to 4 servings per week of fish like tuna, salmon, Pollock, catfish and seafood like shrimp and shellfish
3.) Minimize consumption of tuna; especially albacore tuna
You can also take an omega 3 supplement called Expecta Lipil to get your healthy fatty acids without the risks associated with tainted fish.

Some good tips for staying healthy pregnancy
You have just discovered that you are pregnant. This is definitely one of the best times of your life, but it also means having to re-examine some of your usual activities to make sure that they are still a good idea, especially as your baby and tummy grows. Obviously your health and the health of your baby are the most important things to consider!
Fortunately, doctors will tell you that being pregnant is not an illness or a disease – which means that, for the most part, you should continue doing most of your daily activities and this includes maintaining the fitness program that you have been working on prior to your pregnancy. Of course, you should consult with your doctor before continuing your fitness routine and you may need to “tweak” it a little bit, but one of the best things you can do for your body and for baby is to stay healthy, strong and active while you are pregnant
Of course, you will gain some weight during your pregnancy, for most women this would be an average of 20 to 25 pounds over the entire 9 months, but you can balance out the weight gain with your fitness program -which means that the weight you will be gaining is truly “baby” weight.
Basically, you need to remember that you have to stay active during the pregnancy and certainly after the pregnancy. Letting yourself go while you are pregnant will only result in you having to lose extra weight after the birth – which is certainly not something you will want to do. Remember that moving, staying active and eating well are the secrets to a healthy pregnancy and post delivery!
You can find a simple and relaxing fitness routine that will be geared towards ensuring that you gain the least pregnancy weight as possible – and this can be the routine that you follow throughout your entire pregnancy – it can be safe, healthy and pain free.
Don’t forget the food and those “cravings”! Yes, you will probably get food cravings, but there are some tried and true tested methods to help you stay away from the “fatty, sugary” foods.

Research shows stress can affect pregnancy health
A new study has found that in the weeks and months following 9-11, there was an increase in low birth weight babies born in and around New York City. The study, published in the journal Human Reproduction, found that in the week following the disaster, there was a 44 percent increased risk of newborn babies weighing below 3.3 pounds, and a 67 percent increase in those weighting between 3.3 and 4.4 pounds, compared to babies born three weeks before the disaster.
The rates then stabilized for a few months, but in December and January, there was another peak in low birth weight babies, and yet another in April and May. The authors postulated that the stress of 9-11 immediately caused a higher incidence of pre-term births. The second wave of low birth weight babies may have occurred because the holidays after 9-11 were an emotionally difficult and stressful time, and the third wave may have occurred because these babies were in the earliest—and most vulnerable—phase in their gestation during 9-11.
When an expectant mom is exposed to stress, those stress hormones can pass through the placenta wall and expose the baby. This can do trigger labor to begin prematurely and also initiate the final physiologic shifts toward maturity. Unfortunately rushing the process often leaves the baby with deficits that threaten its health and wellness. If you’re exposed to a stressful situation or are experiencing chronic stress, try to minimize it through stress busting activities like yoga, meditation, biofeedback, and massage.

First trimester screening in pregnancy
Doctors can make a Down syndrome diagnosis for a baby while the mother is still pregnant. Down syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra 21st chromosome in the baby. In the past, mothers were given the choice of having tests to determine if their baby might have Down syndrome. Mothers over 35 are particularly at risk to have a Down syndrome baby. Today most mothers, especially mothers over 35, are strongly encouraged to have the first set of tests, called screening tests, to see if there is any risk of Down syndrome. This article discusses the types of screening tests that are available and the next steps an expectant mother should take if the screening tests indicate a Down syndrome diagnosis.
Knowing you have a healthy baby as early in your pregnancy as possible can significantly ease your worries and stress. And, if there is a problem, it’s better learning this early on, no matter what you decide to do about it. In the past, women had to wait until the second trimester to have an amniocentesis to test for Down syndrome. But in recent years, first trimester screening involving a simple blood test of several hormones and a non-invasive ultrasound, has become available. The combination of these tests detects about 75 percent of fetal problems. When they’re followed by second trimester testing, the detection rate is above 95 percent.
Though the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists now recommends first trimester screening for all pregnant women, many doctors still don’t offer it to their patients. Since it is fairly new, some may not know about it and others may not be trained to do the ultrasound, but some don’t offer it for ideological reasons—they don’t want the patient to consider terminating the pregnancy. A new study of over 38,000 pregnant women determined that all women should undergo first trimester testing, and when the results suggest a woman is at high risk, she should then be offered a minor surgical procedure involving a needle biopsy of the placenta (chorionic villus sampling or CVS) for confirmation or reassurance. This combination of universal screening followed by the CVS in those with a positive test is called contingent sequential testing. All of this should be completed before the twelfth week of pregnancy as it is in other Western countries like England.
The problem is, only 10% of people have easy access to CVS, so some drive to other cities to get it or others wait until they can do an amnio. I urge patients to ask their doctors about first semester screening—the more women who ask, the more doctors will be pressured into offering this important screening and as the demand for CVS increases, it will become more readily available as well.

Tips to keep the stay healthy pregnancy
Having a baby alters a woman's life in many ways, especially during the pregnancy. You are not only responsible for your own health, but the health of your unborn child. Proper healthcare, nutrition, exercise, and amount of rest are essential to a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. What you should be doing during your pregnancy is equally important as what you should not be doing.
Prenatal Care
The first step to a healthy pregnancy is to get regular prenatal care. You should schedule an appointment with your health care provider as soon as you think you might be pregnant. Your doctor will most likely do a pregnancy test to confirm your pregnancy. Next is making the calculation of how far along your pregnancy is based on a physical exam and the date of your last menstrual cycle.
Often an ultrasound will be performed to better approximate your due date. Your doctor will want to see you every 4 weeks until the 28th week of pregnancy, then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks, finally once a week until delivery.
Nutrition
Nutrition is extremely important during your pregnancy. In the last 6 months you should take in an extra 300 calories because your baby is growing quickly. If you are very thin or are carrying more than one baby you need to eat even more. If you are overweight your doctor may recommend you to consume fewer extra calories.
A well-balanced diet is the key to a healthy development and growth for your baby. By eating a variety of lean meats, fruits, vegetable, whole-grain products, and low-fat dairies both you and your baby will get the proper nutrition you need. Your doctor will most likely prescribe prenatal vitamins as a supplement to your diet. You will also need to "bulk" up on more of the essential nutrients such as calcium, iron, and folic acid. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids during your pregnancy, especially water. This can help with common problems such as dehydration and constipation.
Exercise
Exercise is very beneficial during your pregnancy. It is important to always to discuss your exercise regimen with your doctor to make sure it is safe for both you and your baby. Low-impact, moderate-intensity exercise activities such as walking, swimming, yoga, and Pilates are great choices. You will reap the benefits of relaxation, flexibility, and strength by participating in these exercise activities.
Regular exercise during pregnancy can help prevent excess weight gain, reduce back pain, swelling, and constipation, improve sleep, improve mental outlook, increase your energy, prepare for labor, and lessen recovery time.
Be cognizant of your balance: during pregnancy your body produces a hormone called relaxin, which loosens the ligaments in your body making you less stable. This also makes it easy to over-stretch or strain yourself, especially the joints in your pelvis, back and knees. Your center gravity also shifts during pregnancy, another reason to be careful.
Get proper rest
During your pregnancy you are going to feel more tired than you normally do because your body is hard at work to support the baby growing inside of you. As your baby gets bigger, finding a comfortable sleeping position will become a little difficult. Most likely the most comfortable position for sleeping is lying on your side with your knees bent. You can also prop pillows between your legs, under your back, and underneath your stomach to create a more comfortable resting position.
Some doctors recommend sleeping on your left side because the right side of your body contains a large blood vessel. By resting on the left side you prevent the uterus from applying pressure on that vessel, which would constrict blood flow. Sleeping on your left side will increase blood flow to the placenta. On the other hand, alternating sides will help to reduce or prevent varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and swelling of the legs.
Avoid the "No-no's"
There are quite a number of things you should avoid while pregnant such as alcohol, nicotine, recreational drugs, excessive caffeine, and certain foods. It has not been determined what a "safe" amount of alcohol to consume during your pregnancy is so your best bet is to not drink at all. Drinking while pregnant can damage your baby's developing nervous system. Smoking during pregnancy can lead to stillbirth, prematurity, sudden infant death syndrome, asthma and other respiratory problems. High caffeine consumption during pregnancy can increase the risk of a miscarriage, so it is better to avoid caffeine altogether during the first trimester. You should also avoid consuming soft, unpasteurized cheeses, milk and juices, food that contains raw eggs or meat, and sea food containing high levels of mercury. Lunch meats are safe if steamed in the microwave first.
Finally, be intentional and think about what you do -- give yourself and your child the little extra care and help Mother Nature.
